LGBTQIA2S+: Towards a Better Understanding
February 8, 2021 @ 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation: This workshop is aimed towards giving teachers a better understanding of the LGBTQIA2S+ community.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: A recent American study has shown that only 48% of youth identify as exclusively heterosexual. Add to this the percentage of queer, non-binary, gender non-conforming and gender creative youth and the numbers are enormous.
LGBTQIA2S+: The vocabulary is exploding and constantly evolving. On top of this, definitions can differ from one region to another. None of us want to be labeled and yet these identity labels are important for youth in that they help them to self define and feel less alone by finding others like themselves. The aim of this workshop is to demystify the alphabet soup of sexual and gender diversity. What do these terms mean? How should I use them?
CONTENT: This interactive workshop will help you to have a better understanding of the terms so that you can contribute to youth feeling more included at school.
The following topics will be covered:
- Key themes on sexual and gender diversity
- Introduction to 2 spirits realities
- Introduction to trans and non-binary realities
- A critical look at oppressive systems and violence
- Introduction to LGBT+ families.
