Response to Intervention – A model Worth Sharing

Eastern Shores School Board (ESSB) encourages schools to understand and use the Response to Intervention (RTI) model as an approach to better support our students. This approach has been gaining in popularity in recent years and ESSB staff received training to be better equipped to implement the model. The RTI model has been in place for about three years in the Belle Anse and Gaspé Elementary Schools, under the direction of Ms. Beryl Boyle. Ms. Boyle explains that their main goal as a school is to ensure that students receive high quality instruction in all subject areas and TIMELY, TARGETED and STRATEGIC interventions when learning challenges arise. She is proud to say that this is the foundation for RTI in the schools that she directs.

Her approach can be similar to the other ESSB schools however, it is adapted to each school and their reality. During a discussion with a colleague from another school board Ms. Boyle was asked if she would be willing to share how she implements the strategy in her schools. Beryl was happy to oblige and welcomed a team of five teachers, two pedagogical consultants and a principal from the Commission Scolaire du Littoral. Following the visit, we received an email from the visiting school board showing their gratitude. They said, “We were all very impressed with how seamlessly they have been able to make RTI work in their individual contexts.”. They went on to say, “It was a great learning experience for us…” and how pleased they were for the opportunity.

The direction and staff at our schools work hard to create an environment that promotes student success for all students. This is one strategy that is working for Belle Anse and Gaspe Elementary Schools and other school boards are noticing. Congratulations on a tremendous effort Ms. Boyle and staff and thank you for sharing your expertise with others.
